Veer Zaara

Most of the story is told in flashback from Veer's prison cell.

Zaara Haayat Khan (Preity Zinta) is an independent, carefree, and sprightly young Pakistani girl travelling to India. Her bus, which is traveling to India with her "bebe's" (a Punjabi word to denote mother or grandmother, but here used for Zaara's old governess) ashes. Before dying, "Bebe" (Zohra Sehgal) begs Zaara to fulfill her final wish - to take her ashes to India, to the holy Sikh city of Kiritpur, and scatter her ashes in the river there, among her ancestors. Zaara decides to carry out Bebe's dying wish.

In India, Zaara's bus gets into an accident, overturns, and she is saved by an Indian pilot, Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh (Shahrukh Khan). Zaara completes her Bebe's final rites with the help of Veer. He convinces Zaara to go back to his village with him, and spend one day together. Veer then takes Zaara on a tour of India's Punjab and they visit Veer's hometown during the Lodi festival. The two fall in love and Veer is just waiting for the right time to tell Zaara how he feels about her. But then it is revealed that Zaara is engaged to another man, Raza (Manoj Bajpai). During their last few moments together, Veer confesses his love, then watches sadly as Zaara boards the train that will take her back to Pakistan. Both believe that this is the end of the story, and the last time they will ever see each other.

Zaara eventually realizes that she loves Veer and cannot marry her fiancé; Veer, after being told over the phone by Zara's friend Shabbo, that how miserable Zara is without him, quits the Indian Air Force and goes to Pakistan to bring her back with him to India. Zaara's mother, however, begs him to leave Zaara. Zaara's father is a high-profile politician whose reputation will be ruined if news got out that his daughter is in love with a Hindu man. Veer respects this and decides to leave. But Zaara's fiancé, outraged by the shame Zaara has brought upon him, frames Veer and has him wrongly imprisoned for being an Indian spy.

22 years later, Veer meets Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukerji), who is an idealistic Pakistani lawyer, whose mission in life is to pave the path for women's empowerment. To dissuade a female lawyer from being successful, she has been given Veer's case, an impossible case to many. The man has been languishing in prison and has not spoken for the last 22 years.

Veer tells Saamiya she can do anything for the case except mention, much less subpoena, Zaara's family. He's assigned the number 786 for his prisoner number. This convinces Saamiya that God has chosen Veer for some special purpose, and determined to exonerate him, and restore his name, identity and country.

After a number of attempts which fail to prove Veer's innocence, Saamiya goes to Veer's village in India to gather evidence proving Veer is Veer and not Rajesh Rathore the spy. There, Saamiya finds Zaara has taken over in the village for Veer's parents. Saamiya convinces Zaara to go back to Pakistan with her and finally tell the truth about Veer's identity. The judge releases Veer from prison and apologizes on behalf of Pakistan. After Veer is finally released, he and Zaara return to India together, at last reunited.

Dev Saran (Shahrukh Khan), a successful soccer player, is unhappily married to Rhea (Preity Zinta), a hard-working woman who has a high-flying job with a fashion magazine. They have a son named Arjun. Reserved schoolteacher Maya (Rani Mukerji) is about to marry her childhood friend Rishi Talwar (Abhishek Bachchan). Samarjit a.k.a "Sexy Sam" (Amitabh Bachchan) is Rishi's dad, and Kamaljit (Kirron Kher) plays the peppy mom to Dev.

Dev happens to meet Maya right before her wedding, and despite being strangers, they connect instantly. The connection between the two remains a glowing spark that re-ignites when they meet four years later.

During those four years, Dev, who had signed a contract for $5 million to play professional football, has been hit by a car, an accident that leaves him crippled and ends his football career. Rhea takes it upon herself to look after the family, leaving Dev embittered. So when Maya meets Dev the next time, he is bitter - his failed career and failing marriage are festering wounds to which his wife Rhea's professional success acts as rubbing salt. In the Talwar home, things are no better - Maya still does not feel any love for Rishi and feels guilty for her inability to have children.

Dev and Maya realize that their situations are similar and decide to help each other repair their breaking marriages. Things do not work quite as expected however, and they become more and more drawn to each other. At the same time, Rishi and Rhea are working to keep their marriages afloat and are willing to see hope in even the smallest, most innocuous signs from their partners. However, their efforts are insignificant in the face of Maya and Dev's intense unhappiness in their marriages and their growing love for each other.

Dev and Maya give in to a dreamy, coffee-drenched romance and realize they have fallen in love. However, when Dev is about to give flowers to Maya, he sees Rhea and gives them to her so she does not see Maya. He saves one rose for Maya. She takes the rose home and Rishi sees it and Maya gives it to him. Rhea and Rishi now think that their partners really love them and are happy. But after an incident at the ballet that makes Dev intensely jealous, they realize they now feel like they are cheating on each other with their own spouses. This realization brings them to a dramatic point of no return and they sleep together. Shortly afterward, they are caught in an embrace outside the train station by Sam and Kamaljeet.

Sam, having lived the good life for a long, long time ultimately has to bear the punishment of all his excesses - he has a fatal heart attack and as he lies on his death bed, he gives Maya some unconventional advice: he tells her to leave his son Rishi since neither of them are happy in their marriage.

Things come to a head and Dev and Maya decide to leave each other and return to their partners. But this re-union will not be without honesty, so they come clean and confess their extramarital affair. Rishi and Rhea decide that enough is enough and end their marriages - this does not mean that Maya and Dev come together however. They only speak to each other on the phone, and lie to each other, saying that all is well in their marriages.

Three years later, Rishi goes to meet Maya and invites her to his wedding. There Rhea sees Maya for the first time in three years and realizes that she and Rishi were not together as she thought. The news that Dev is still alone, combined with some prodding from Rishi and Rhea convinces Maya to run after Dev. Dev is about to catch a train to Canada when he sees Maya. He hides from her because he has told Maya earlier that he was happy with Rhea and he thinks that she is happily married to Rishi. However, Maya finds him in his seat a few seconds before his train leaves the station. He uses the emergency brakes to get out to meet her. Realising how alone the two have been, Dev proposes to Maya and she accepts.

This creates a romance triangle. One day, Rahul confesses his love for Tina to Anjali. Anjali leaves college suddenly, vowing to forget the heartbreak he caused.

Every year, on Anjali's birthday, she is given a letter and hears her mother's loving wishes for her. In the eighth and last letter, the little girl is told about her namesake. Where Rahul had been blind, Tina had noticed the older Anjali's emotions and pitied her deeply. Because Rahul hasn't remarried, perhaps his first love could be the mother that the young Anjali needs and wants.

Anjali Jr. believes that the older Anjali can make her beloved father happy again, and decides to help her father reclaim his lost paramour. She soon recruits her doting grandmother (Rahul's mother, played by Farida Jalal) and grandfather (Tina's father played by Anupam Kher) as accomplices.

The unlikely conspirators locate Rahul's old friend and contrive to make Rahul and Anjali meet again. They meet in a camp where Anjali Jr. had enrolled, where her namesake is a counselor. The namesake discovers, without the younger girl's knowledge, the truth of her new charge's parentage. Rahul soon finds old feelings reviving. Gurukul is run by a stern headmaster named Narayan Shankar, played by Amitabh Bachchan. He is very strict disciplinarian who believes his institute runs because of his principles, rules and disciplines. Apparently the students are picked from universities all over the country to study further in Gurukul and the headmaster had high expectations of them. The headmaster has instituted a strict anti-romance policy. Students are there to learn, he says, not to party and flirt. Students who become romantically involved will be expelled.

The three of them all have their hearts set on different girls. Sameer (Jugal Hansraj) works in a cafe and is in love with his childhood friend Sanjana (Kim Sharma). Unfortunately for Sameer, she has a boyfriend. Vikram (Uday Chopra) accidentally bumps into Ishika (Shamita Shetty) when he catches her stealing apples from the Gurukul gardens, and falls in love at first sight. Karan (Jimmy Shergill) sees Kiran (Preeti Jhangiani) on a hill when he is waiting for a train. Kiran is married to an Army Officer who never returned from war, yet she holds hope that he is alive.

But they all give up hope of taking their romance to the next level, for the fear of Narayan Shankar and his stern ways. They do not want to get expelled.

Enters Raj Aryan (Shahrukh Khan), with flowers and violin in his hand, who wants to join Gurukul as a music teacher, after some reluctance, Narayan Shankar allows Raj to join the institute. Raj Aryan teaches music, spreads the message of love amongst the 3 men, and encourages them to follow their hearts and fall in love.

Raj Aryan tells the 3 students that he loved a woman named Megha (Aishwariya Rai) who was forbidden to love him due to her father, Narayan Shankar and due to this she commited suicide by jumpng off her bedroom balcony, but he continues to love her. We also get a glimse of Megha, who in Raj's imagination still comes alive and speaks to him when he is alone.

The three boys fall in love and the relationship between the headmaster and the music teacher begins to become strained. Much to the chagrin of the headmaster, Raj begins to implement many changes. Hosting parties, inviting girls from the nearby girls hostel, celebrating festivals and encouraging students to break the strict rules.

When Narayan found out he banned them from seeing each other, expelled the boy without seeing him, and distanced himself from his daughter. She became upset and ultimately committed suicide by throwing herself out the window.

This tragic experience inspired Raj to spread love throughout Gurukul, and one day reach out to Narayan Shankar and show him to magic of love and affection.

When Narayan Shankar realises that Raj is the same boy who was in love with his daughter, he pulls all stops to remove him from the institute and destroy his plans. Raj continues to help the 3 boys and their lovers to meet against school rules and the story turns into war between Raj Aryan and Narayan Shankar.

Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta) is an angry young woman, for more than one reason. Her father committed suicide when she needed him the most, leaving his wife Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan) to raise their children all alone. Lajjo (Sushma Seth), Naina's paternal grandmother, blames Jennifer for the suicide and refuses to accept Gia, a six-year-old girl whom Jennifer adopted, as her granddaughter, blaming her for bringing bad luck to the family. Naina has to put up with the daily fights that take place in the house as a result. In addition, the restaurant Jennifer operates is faltering. The only factors that redeem her life are the toiling and tolerant Jennifer and Naina's bumbling MBA classmate Rohit (Saif Ali Khan)........

Aman Mathur (Shahrukh Khan) arrives in Naina's neighbourhood and soon changes everything. Noticing the sadness of his new neighbours, he intervenes. His well-meaning interference in their activities, his revival of their financial condition, and his general optimism soon change their lives for the better. Although Naina is initially reluctant to enjoy Aman's presence as others do and is irritated by his extroverted, overly-enthusiastic attitude, she grows to like him and eventually to love him.

Meanwhile, her friend Rohit has fallen in love with her. On Aman's encouragement, he calls Naina for lunch but before he can propose to her, she reveals her love for Aman. Rohit informs Aman about this and leaves shortly for his parents' home. Naina goes to Aman's house where, to stop her from confessing her feelings to him, Aman tells her that he is married to a woman named Priya.

Aman, it is revealed, is dying of a weak heart. Knowing that his lifespan is limited, he goes through life facilitating friendships and courtship, and urging people to enjoy themselves in the present moment since "tomorrow might never come". His excursions into such altruism extend to sacrificing his love for Naina and instead playing matchmaker between her and Rohit. After a few weeks of courtship, Naina starts to like Rohit as more than just a friend and accepts his proposal of marriage.

The tension within Naina's family also stops when Aman, after intercepting a personal letter addressed to Jennifer, reveals that Gia is Naina's half-sister through their father's extramarital affair. Lajjo finally accepts Gia, and the now-united family wholeheartedly prepare for Rohit and Naina's wedding.

As the film progresses, Aman's health deteriorates. One episode of intense excitement nearly kills him. Naina, in a chance encounter, meets Priya, Aman's supposed wife who is actually his doctor. She then realises that Aman had lied about him being married to hide his true condition, and possibly, the fact that he may love her in return. She goes to see Aman, and although he defiantly refuses to admit his true feelings, she finally makes him admit that he loves her as well. Aman convinces her to get married to Rohit anyway, because he will not be alive much longer. Aman eventually dies of his weakness, shortly after Rohit and Naina get married

Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) is the adopted son of Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) and his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan). Both of them love Rahul more than their biological son, Rohan, who is younger than Rahul by nine years. Yash is a rich and famous business man in India. He believes in keeping traditions, and is against love marriages. When Rahul returns home from his overseas university, he meets Anjali (Kajol) and falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Rohan befriends Pooja, Anjali's younger sister.

Yash decides to arrange Rahul's marriage to his friend's daughter, Naina (Rani Mukerji). Rahul, however, tells his father that he wants to marry Anjali; this angers Yash, who berates Rahul for not considering Anjali's breeding and social status (Anjali is a common girl from a middle class family, as opposed to Naina). Rahul apologizes to Yash and promises to do whatever is asked of him. He goes to tell Anjali that he can't marry her, and finds that her father has died suddenly. After seeing that Anjali and Pooja have no other family and no one to live with, he marries Anjali on the spot. When he brings her home, his father disowns him. Rahul, shocked and hurt, shares an emotional good-bye with his mother; Nandini asks Rohan and Rahul's nanny, Sayeeda (Farida Jalal), to accompany Rahul wherever he goes so that he will always have a mother's love and care. After visiting Rohan, who is at boarding school, one last time he leaves with Anjali, Pooja, and Sayeeda.

Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) is devastated by the split in the family, but has never learned why Rahul left because Rahul had made him promise never to ask. Ten years later, on his way home for the holidays, he stops to meet his maternal and paternal grandmothers and overhears them discussing the split; upon confrontation, they tell him the whole truth. When he goes to his parents' home, he learns from a few acquaintances of Anjali's that Rahul and Anjali have settled down in London. Vowing to himself to bring Rahul and Anjali home, he tells his parents that he wants to go to London to study; Yash reluctantly agrees. As soon as he arrives in London, he tracks Rahul down and learns his address. He enrolls at the university and finds that Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) happens to be a student there. He tells her who he is and asks her to help him bring the family back together.

Meanwhile, Rahul has started his own business and is living comfortably with Pooja, Sayeeda and Anjali and their nine-year-old son, Krish. Pooja tells them that Rohan is her best friend's brother who has come from India and needs a place to stay. Rahul and Anjali warmly welcome him (or rather, grudgingly on Rahul's part), and Rohan soon becomes a part of the family without revealing who he is. He reminds the family how much they miss India and their parents. Eventually, he tells everyone the truth and tries to convince Rahul to go back to India and meet their parents. He even goes so far as to convince Yash and Nandini to come to London with the hope that Yash will reunite with Rahul. This fails, but Rahul and Nandini share a joyful reunion. At this point Anjali, too, attempts to persuade Rahul to go back to India and meet his father. Rahul, convinced that his father doesn't love him and wants nothing to do with him, remains adamant, until they learn that Yash's mother has died, and her last wish was for Rahul, Yash, and Rohan to light her funeral pyre together. Rahul goes back to India, but participates in the funeral without speaking to his father.

Nandini confronts Yash and tells him, for the first time in ten years, that he was wrong in cutting ties with Rahul, whom he had brought into their home with such love and happiness. This leaves Yash stunned, and at odds with himself. Rohan finally manages to convince Rahul to speak to Yash. He takes Rohan, Pooja, and Anjali and goes to meet him, and finds Yash humbled and sad. Yash apologizes to Rahul and berates him for believing that his father did not love him and for not returning home sooner.

Things end happily, with Rohan and Pooja's wedding and a belated celebration of Rahul and Anjali's wedding.
